How I Rate Anime   2 comments

Greetings,

I’m John, an average teenager who obsessed with Japanese Pop Culture – Otaku Culture. I love to watch anime and will write review for any anime that I have watched, well from time to time.

I would like to share my method of rating an anime. Well, It is not very professional but rather personal and subjective.

My ratings are from 0-100 points.

  • 90-100pts = Masterpiece
  • 80-89.9pts = Excellent
  • 70-79.9pts = Great
  • 60-69.9pts = Good
  • 50-59.9pts = Decent
  • 40-49.9pts = Not Really Good
  • 30-39.9pts = Weak
  • 20-29.9pts = Bad
  • 10-19.9pts = Awful
  • 0-9.9pts = WORST EVER
  • Dropped = Dropped

I believe there will be hardly any reviews below 30points. Would you

Animes which I rated 70points and above would be fairly nice and recommended to most of the people. (Depends on personal preferences.)

Story

Hmm, this point is very personal. There are stories that I like however others may not like them… Some stories could make you laugh with them, but some epic failure couldn’t even make the humour common.

Factors which take into account are:

  • Genre of anime (what type the story is, Action? Romance? Fantasy? or others… Whether the content suits the theme or not.)
  • Strong Plot? or Fan-Service? or both. (Depends on the genre of the anime, should they waste most of their episodes on fan-servicing or not)
  • Story Details
  • The progress of the story. (Distribution & Manipulation. To be simple, how they tell the story…)

“Happily ever after” ending won’t earn extra points, “Kill them all” ending sometimes have higher points… what I seek is a GOOD story, I won’t complaint if the ending is acceptable and reasonable.

Animation

Factors which take into account are:

  • The time the anime released (Don’t expect the anime released in year 1998 to have the same quality as one released in year 2008, I mean the technology used, etc…)
  • Type of the released anime, Movie? OVA? TV series? (movies are held to have higher quality than OVA, while OVA are held to have higher quality than TV series)
  • Art. (is the Anime production company is doing it properly? mostly same principle as above. Artwork, Colouring…)
  • Details (the major and minor details of an anime. From a background image down to it’s every single sand.)
  • Animation smoothness (natural animation movements)
  • Design. (character design, mecha design or whatsoever…)

I’m not an Anime Expert, basically how I rate it is, if the animation is well done, I rate it high. If it isn’t, then no. Pretty simple I think.

Audio

Again, partially subjective to whether I just like it or not. However, I do pay attention to whether the music helps define or confuse the look and feel of the story. Is the soundtrack used suitable for the scene? What is the music quality? How is the voice actors perform? How is the theme songs appeal to me and etc.

Factors which take into account are:

  • Opening theme, Ending theme, Insert theme.
  • Opening & Ending animation.
  • BGM / Soundtrack.
  • Seiyuu (voice actor)

Personal Rating

While the left 10 points is calculated according how much I enjoyed the anime, from 1 to 10. The most simple rating among the 4 parts.

Point Calculation

  • 40points for Story.
  • 30points for Animation.
  • 20Points for Audio.
  • 10Points for personal rating.

40+30+20+10 = 100. Pretty simple isn’t it?
