Meals in PLKN

Posted by John on May 8, 2009

desclaimer: What I’m going to write are my personal experience and thoughts.

Everyone knows that, if you’re enrolled in our country’s National Service programme. Other than having 3 months of Malaysian-PLKN-style-training, you’ll have 6 meals a day too.

So, lots of people argued about the outcome of PLKN. some say, will become fat, some say the opposite…

Lets take a look at the time table for each meal…

  • 6.30am – Morning exercise
  • 7.30am – Breakfast
  • 8.30am – Class
  • 10.30am – Tea break
  • 11.00am – continue class
  • 12.30pm – Lunch & rest (on Friday, 12noon)
  • 2.30pm – Physical Class (on Friday, 2.45pm)
  • 4.30pm – Tea Break
  • 5.30pm – Recreation
  • 6.15pm-8.30pm – Dinner
  • 7.00pm-9.00pm – Malays go pray
  • 7.30pm-9.00pm – Chinese/Indians gather at hall
  • 9.00pm – Night activity (watch DVD or something else)
  • 10.30pm – Supper
  • 11.30pm – Lights off

As you can see, you’ll get a chance to fill your stomach in an average 2-2.5 hours… We just don’t have the time to feel hungry…

According to our Camp Commander, the meals are set by JLKN and every camp in Malaysia are having the same set of diet. For example, if you’re having a chicken rice lunch, other camps are having the same too…. Well, I think JLKN did set the diet, but maybe some camps still not yet start following it… cause I heard some of my friends at other camp say that their meals are always the same everyday…

The foods are HALAL, but it doesn’t mean that you’ll only get to eat Malay food only. Sometimes, got chapati halal, nasi goreng cina halal, and etc… hahaha….

Lots of people are complaining about the food, but I think our camp’s food quite acceptable. Other than complaining, they choose to eat instant noodle rather than having the meal prepared…

So, what I see is… they’re all spoilt kids… What is the problem that they can’t eat malay food?

I’m not saying we can’t eat instant noodles, but every time, I’m pissed off to see they eat maggi for every meal… great one…

Kem PLKN Terkok

Posted by John on April 15, 2009

How could I forget to introduce my camp… Kem Terkok…

I got my PLKN magazine yesterday, along with a DVD of photos. Oh Joy, from now on I’ll blog plkn posts with photos. no more boring texts…

From the entrance, we got a large parking lot which also works as a volleyball court. Photo of our trainers having a game of volleyball.

This is the camp’s office. The left building in the picture is Logistic Unit.

While the right building is Medical Unit.

Wards.

Our camp’s survival village. Learnt how to build these when I was a scouts. Oh, I’m still a scouts. Need to keep up my english level…

The multi-usage-hall. One side works as canteen, the place we had our six meals a day.

While the other side we used as gathering hall. Got a stage though..

Beside the hall, we got a special room for Trainers-in-Duty. Bilik Jurulatih Bertugas or in short Bilik JLB.

Behind the JLB room, we got some classes. We had our Character Building module, Intergration program module and Nationality module there.

This is the surau where our muslims friends went to pray everyday.

This is the place we hate the most… Marching Court…

This is the Rope Climbing area (high element). I heard that this tower is the highest among all the PLKN camps in Malaysia.

Kembara Halangan. got videos from youtube though…

Actually there are a few places not including in the photos, such as the mini-grocery shop, the burger stall, dorms, and the lake… etc etc

This is what we had every morning… Nice mountain view and the air is fresh.

TimeTable of PLKN

Posted by John on April 10, 2009

Long awaited PLKN post… Like what I said before, I’ll try to categorize everything in a series of topics, such as Food in PLKN, Dorms in PLKN and etc…

To make things easier, below is the simple timetable you have to follow if you’re in PLKN.

  • 6.30am – Morning exercise
  • 7.30am – Breakfast
  • 8.30am – Class
  • 10.30am – Tea break
  • 11.00am – continue class
  • 12.30pm – Lunch & rest (on Friday, 12noon)
  • 2.30pm – Physical Class (on Friday, 2.45pm)
  • 4.30pm – Tea Break
  • 5.30pm – Recreation
  • 6.15pm-8.30pm – Dinner
  • 7.00pm-9.00pm – Malays go pray
  • 7.30pm-9.00pm – Chinese/Indians gather at hall
  • 9.00pm – Night activity (watch DVD or something else)
  • 10.30pm – Supper
  • 11.30pm – Lights off

Got the idea? This is what we NS trainees did everyday.. I’ll simply explain the timetable for you guys. By the way, this is what I had at Kem Terkok. I can’t guarantee that all the camps are having 100% same timetable, there will be some minor difference…

Timetable stated that 6.30am for morning exercise… That means you gonna set your feet on the marching field at that time. Many people ask me what time have to wake up…. lol it depends on you… some people would wear the PE suit when he goes to bed, then the 2nd day, around 6.25am wake up and straight go to marching field. ^^

After morning exercise, 7.30am until 8.30am is breakfast time, you’re not being forced to eat on 7.30am. Some prefer to have a bath first then only take their breakfast. I’ll further talk about the food in later posts. After that we’re required to wear our class uniform, class time… Well, in PLKN we have 3 major classes, Kelas Pembinaan Karakter (Character Building Class), Program Intergrasi (Intergration Programme) and Kelas Kenegaraan (Nationality Class). I’ll explain those in future.

From 8.30am until 12.30pm, class time… tea break on 10.30am… Then 12.30pm, lunch time… On friday, we’re 30minutes earlier to have our lunch because the Malays have to go to Mosque…

2.30pm… nightmares… You know 2.30pm is so damn hot in Malaysia, and yet they choose that time for outdoor activities… I’m gonna kill the person who thought of this idea… I didn’t meant that we can’t endure the hot sun, but why we’re so stupid until to have physical activities under that freaking HOT SUN!!!

4.30pm tea break… and then 5.30pm, recreation time… Football, volleyball, and sometimes aerobic dancing… lol..

6.15pm until 8.30pm, dinner time, same as other meals, you can eat within that period of time… Malays need to be ready on 7pm, because they have to go to surau to pray… while chinese and indians gather at the hall. We had some games or just chit-chat while waiting the time to past…

9.00pm, night activity… usually we watch DVD this time… Character building’s DVD, or PLKN’s DVD. Other activities such as medical speech, show or others also held on that time.

Until 10.30pm, we had our supper then gather again to sing National song and PLKN song… After that… this is exclusive in Kem TERKOK only… We Wira (Boys) have to kawad around the volleyball court for 1 round, after that we’re only allowed to go back to dorm… =.= I have no idea why we need to do that.. our trainers said it was camp commander’s new rule…

Phew… Thats all about the time table… Still more to write about.. stay tuned for next PLKN post. ^^

First Impression(?) on PLKN

Posted by John on January 30, 2009

after 4 weeks or 28days in PLKN/Khidmat Negara/National Service, finally its semester break… lol… Chinese New Year break… I’m back to my house… during those times in PLKN, I missed my usual daily routine… computing, anime-ing, and etc…

I’m sorry for the late post, I found it is so hard for me to start blogging again after leaving for a month… That day, when I reach home, after taking a bath, I straightly sit in front of my PC. My right hand become numb to the mouse… I cant control it properly during that moment. It felt like first time using a mouse. Well, it seems that I’m losing my blogging passion too…

In this post I would be talking about my first thoughts on PLKN…

First of all, the life at there. Many people asked me how was the life in PLKN, is it difficult? Personally, I don’t think that life at there is hard. Comparing with my previous experiences, Scouts’ camps are far more difficult… packed time table, theory exams, practical exams… making earth as your bed, prepare your own meals and etc… PLKN is far more better, with bed, pillow, and blanket… 6 meals a day… all for FREE… better than any camps I went before, which I have to pay for registration… omfg…

However, leaving everything for 3months is a big issue for me. Leaving your loved ones, your hobbies, your lifestyles and even yourself… you have to behave as how they want you to. Try to imagine…

I saw this sentence (grafiti) on my drom-mate’s locker: “When you’re in PLKN, there is no need to think of anything, just follow whatever intructions, then your 3 months will pass peacefully…”

I’m very agree with it. The most peaceful way to handle PLKN’s lifestyle… but there’s still another option to choose… well, I’m totally disagree with this method, but i bet someone would choose this option. To oppress it, heavily… lol..

NOT recommended…

Currently, I have no idea what should I write already… I’ll try to list out everything that I want to blog when I back to the camp… Then when I’m back from PLKN, I’ll share my experience with you guys.
