Kimi-kiss ~ pure rouge DVD Special – love fighter
キミキス pure rouge DVD Special – love fighter

Plot Summary:

The special episode entitled “love fighter” that comes with Kimi-kiss DVD. The story is focus on Kuryuu Megumi.

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Light, Romance, School, Slice-of-Life

Age Rating: Teenage and above

No. of Episodes: 1 Special

Story

While i was watching the main series, I was expecting her appearance in the story, because normally the combination of serious girl and romance would generate a great story. However, she didn’t get much screen time, not even her own story arc. and now she’s getting a single episode special treatment which focus mainly on her.

Storywise, is good but a bit cramped. The reason is due to the producer trying to stuff every cast in to this single episode.

I’ll have it rated: 32/40

Animation

Studio: J.C.STAFF

Year: 2007

Type: Special

The quality is basically the same as the TV series. Thus I’ll skip on reviewing this. Same goes for the sound work.

Macross Plus

Plot Summary:

The year is 2040 and the galaxy is flourishing with several colonies and advanced technology. AI is near perfection and the current top idol is the near-completed Virturoid Idol Sharon Apple. All that is missing are her actual feelings, which instead are supplied by Myung Fang Lone. Sharon’s debut concert is on planet Eden, where at the same time, fighter pilots Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman battle over air superiority for the “Supernova Project.” Isamu, Guld and Myung were once childhood friends, but after an accident seven years ago, they went their own separate ways. With Myung back in the picture, the old disputes are once again awakened. And when an unstable and illegal AI technique is installed in Sharon, the situation is worsened.

Genre: Action, Drama, Mecha, Military, Romance, Science-Fiction, Space-Opera

Age Rating: Teenage and above (may contain bloody violence / bad language / nudity)

No. of Episodes: 4 OVAs

Story

After around 10 years of its prequel, on 1994 comes the official sequel of Macross franchise.

The story of this OVA is great, featuring romance, mecha action and futuristic science-fiction story which involves with a conflict between human and Artificial Intelligence. This is the main difference between this OVA and its prequels, either official or “inofficial”.

I think that the story is very well plotted. I’m satisfied with the way that the relationship between the characters are being illustrated. The details are revealed episode by episode until the end.

Overall, the story is very good, the triangle relationship, the friendship, and the mankind versus Artificial Intelligence. However, there’s some minor flaws that I noticed, it never explained that how come the AI’s hologram is appearing at places that doesn’t have hologram projector. or is it just the illusions that created by the AI’s music..?

I’ll have it rated: 33.5/40

Animation

Studio: Studio Nue, Triangle Staff, Bandai Visual

Year: 1994

Type: OVA

The animation is great in this OVA. First to be mention is the mecha action. I’m really impressed with the precision of the details of the mecha action scenes, either during the test flights or the battle scenes. Especially the battle scene in the third episode is superbly great.

Of course not to forget about the excellent artwork of the 4 episode OVA. Superbly detailed hand drawn animations mixed with some CG effects (at certain scenes). I heard that Sharon’s concert is sepcially designed by a famous animation director, Morimoto Koji.

The overall design and quality is crips and vibrant. Excellent piece of hand-drawn animation.

I’ll have it rated: 26/30

Audio

Opening Theme(s):

  1. “Voices (a capella version)” by Arai Akino (ep 1)
  2. “Voices (English Version)” by Michelle Flynn (ep 1)
  3. “Idol Talk” by Arai Akino (ep 2)
  4. “Pulse” by Wuyuntana (ep 4)

Ending Theme(s):

  1. “After, in the Dark” by Yamane Mai (eps 1-3)
  2. “Voices (English Version)” by Michelle Flynn (ep 4)
  3. “Voices” by Akino Arai (ep 4)

Insert Theme(s):

  1. “SANTI-U” by Gabriela Robin
  2. “Voices” by Arai Akino
  3. various…

The music in this OVA is impressive. The AI, Sharon’s song are basically just sound only. Which we have to listen and feel it instead of just listen to the lyrics and the song.

Even though the music and soundtrack are made pretty well and I hardly found any flaws in the soundwork of this anime, but the music just won’t suit my taste…

I’ll have it rated: 15.5/20

Personal Rating

Yes, this OVA has great story with excellent animation and soundwork. If you like macross franchise, watch this.

Anime Review: Macross II – Lovers Again

Macross II - Lovers Again

Plot Summary:

A.D. 2089 – 80 years have passed since Space War I changed the lives of both human and Zentraedi races. Both races are at peace on Earth when a new alien race called the “Marduk” appear within the Solar System. While covering the first battle between the U.N. Spacy and the Marduk fleet, SNN rookie reporter Hibiki Kanzaki discovers Ishtar, an “Emulator” that enhances the Marduk’s combat abilities through singing. Hibiki brings Ishtar to Earth to teach her the values of life and culture. Together with ace Valkyrie pilot Silvie Gena, Hibiki and Ishtar must find a way to save Earth from total destruction at the hands of the Marduk leader Ingues.

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Mecha, Military, Romance, Science-Fiction, Space-Opera

Age Rating: Teenage and above (may contain bloody violence / bad language / nudity)

No. of Episodes: 6 OVA

Story

The story of Macross II is not a sequel for Macross. It is a spinoff or what we called parallel world. The main reason is that the original creator has no interest of writing a sequel during that time, thus only 3 out of the original Macross staff is returned for the production.

After completing the 6 episodes OVA, I think that it is not very good if compared with previous Macross series. The plot is rather simple and quite similar with the original series. Even though this series starts and shown from the view of a civilian/journalist, this is a rather promising starting, but it turned out to have nothing to do with it. It became how Ishtar discover the special of Earth’s culture rather than that.

As conclusion, the story don’t have much impact as what I expected…

I’ll have it rated: 31.5/40

Animation

Studio: AIC, ONIRO

Year: 1992

Type: OVA

I was shocked to see a huge animation difference between the “Macross: Flash Back 2012″ and this OVA. After getting some information from wikipedia, only I found that the original animation production company, Studio Nue didn’t take part in the prodcution of this OVA.

I’m kind of disappointed with the outcome. The artwork is just average as any 90s anime quality. I like the quality of “Macross Flash Back 2012″ more than this.

Putting aside the quality comparison, the overall quality is still reach the satisfication level.

I’ll have it rated: 25/30

To be frank, I’m not satisfied with the soundwork of this OVA. It doesn’t have the feel that created by Iijima Mari… You know what I mean.

Anime Review: Macross – Flash Back 2012

Choujikuu Yousai Macross – Flash Back 2012

Super Dimension Fortress Macross – Flash Back 2012

Macross: Flash Back 2012

Plot Summary:

Flash Back 2012 is Minmei’s farewell concert. Featuring some of her best songs, the music is performed over various scenes and events taken from Macross TV as well as Macross “Do You Remember Love”. Also included is a newly animated closing sequence showing the launch of Misa’s colony vessel, the Megaroad-01, into space.

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Mecha, Military, Romance, Science-Fiction, Space-Opera

Age Rating: Everyone

No. of Episodes: 1 OVA

Story

Well, storywise, this OVA is about MinMay’s concert before she left the Earth in Megaroad-01. So, we have a 31minutes OVA filled MinMay’s (Iijima Mari) songs and flashbacks of the TV series and movie scenes.

I can’t say that this OVA summarized the TV series and movie version, as both versions’ stories are not related, however what made both connected is the music. Therefore after all the flashbacks, it also show a new footage that showing Megaroad-01 launching from the Earth.

I enjoyed this OVA a lot. You get to listen all MinMay’s song and recall those great moments from the TV and movie versions.

I’ll have it rated: 34/40

Animation

Studio: Studio Nue, Artland, Tatsunoko Productions

Year: 1987

Type: OVA

Animation wise, well, there are some good parts and bad parts… Since this OVA is a “summary” of the both versions, it has scenes from both versions. and of course some new scenes of the launching Megaroad-01.

The bad part is that the movie scenes looks degraded. The movie’s artwork is excellent however, they don’t seem to be as great as what I’ve seen in the movie version. Scenes from the TV version still maintain it’s original quality.

Well, the good part is how they blend the scenes together and the new footage are very nice indeed.

I’ll have it rated: 26/30

Audio

Opening Theme(s):

  1. “Tenshi no Enogu” by Iijima Mari

Ending Theme(s):

  1. “Runner” by Iijima Mari

Insert Theme(s):

  1. “Tenshi no Enogu” by Iijima Mari
  2. “Sunset Beach” by Iijima Mari
  3. “0-G Love” by Iijima Mari
  4. “Shao Pai Lon” by Iijima Mari
  5. “Silver Moon, Red Moon” by Iijima Mari
  6. “Ai wa Nagareru” by Iijima Mari
  7. “Cinderella” by Iijima Mari
  8. “Ai wo Oboete Imasuka” by Fujiwara Makoto & Iijima Mari

I think you’ll get the chance to listen to all MinMay’s (Iijima Mari) song in this OVA. Well, Iijima Mari is certainly very talented. She’s not just performing the song, in fact she also writes the song. She’s absolutely great. Macross need her to reach this level of success.

I’ll have it rated: 19/20

Personal Rating

Wonderful, I never watched any OVA which are fully musical as this.

Macross: Do you Remember Love?

Plot Summary:

A.D. 2009 – The human race is in the middle of a three-way war with a race of giant humanoid aliens called the Zentraedi (male) and Meltrandi (female). After executing a space fold that sent it and part of South Atalia Island to the edge of the Solar System, the space fortress Macross is on its way back to Earth. During a small skirmish with Zentraedi forces, young pilot Hikaru Ichijo rescues idol singer Lynn Minmay and their relationship develops as they’re stranded somewhere within the ship. But shortly after returning to Macross City, Minmay is captured by the Zentraedi, and Hikaru and female officer Misa Hayase end up back on Earth – only to view the aftermath of the destruction of their civilization. Only a song discovered eons ago – along with Minmay’s voice – can determine the outcome of the war.

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Mecha, Military, Romance, Science-Fiction, Space-Opera

Age Rating: Teenage and above (may contain bloody violence / bad language / nudity)

No. of Episodes: 1 Movie

Story

4years ago, I was told by someone that “Macross: Do You Remember Love?” is a great anime movie. Until today, after finished the movie, I only know it is an amazing movie.

The story is basically don’t have any relation with the TV series at all. I’ll say it is a spinoff or parallel world story. Many events are different between the movie version and TV version. For example, in TV version, Ichijou and MinMay already know each other before boarding the Macross, while in the movie version, they only know each other after boarding the Macross. There’s still a lot of differences other than that.

To fully enjoy this movie, it’s best to complete the original series of Macross, so you’ll have better idea about what the story is about. Although the plot differs with the TV series, they still based on a same idea, which the characters’ relationship conflict are the same.

The story might be a bit rush as it tries to cover as much events as possible – Ichijou and MinMay & Hayase’s relationship, the conflict between mankinds and aliens, and more. Still I enjoyed the show, as it rush with a pace that everyone could catch up. Which they done a really good job at the screenplay.

A great movie, I completed the TV series, impressed. Then finished this movie… Touched…

I’ll have it rated: 36.5/40

Animation

Studio: Studio Nue, Artland, Tatsunoko Production, Shogakukan

Year: 1984

Type: Movie

The animation is top notch. The movie version has lots of changes and improvement, such as the updated character looks and more precise mech details. All these improvements are still based on the original design. For example, the Zentraedi characters are drawn in a way that looks more alien and dark; the mechs details are more precise and looks more realistic.

Although I can’t say how great the animation quality is, but after I complete the movie version, I can’t believe that the 80s anime has such great animation production ability. Even though nowadays we have all those extremely CGI-ed anime movies, but none of them can create the feeling of the 80s anime movie.

I’ll have it rated: 27/30

Audio

Opening Theme(s):

  1. “Prologue” by Haneda Kentarou

Ending Theme(s):

  1. “Tenshi no Enogu” by Iijima Mari

Insert Theme(s):

  1. “Ai Oboete Imasuka” by Iijima Mari
  2. and much more

Excellent work done on the sound of this movie. Most of the music of this movie are the same as the TV-series with a new theme song specially for this movie, “Ai Oboete Imasuka” (Do You Remember Love?). The theme song is superbly great, it made this movie a great success

Other than that, I should mention about the Zentraedi’s language. In TV series, their language is automatically being translated to Japanese. However, in the movie version, they got a special treatment. They got their own language. Splendid!! It is subbed with Japanese originally with additional English depends on which version you get.

I’ll have it rated: 18/20

Personal Rating

Absolutely a great movie. If you want to know how wonderful it is, first complete the Macross TV series first then watch this.

Anime Review: Super Dimension Fortress Macross

SDF Macross

Plot Summary:

In 1999, an alien ship crashes on South Atalia Island and makes the human race aware of other life in space. Ten years later, the ship is reconstructed and christened as the SDF-1 Macross. However, on the day of its maiden voyage, an alien race called the Zentraedi make their appearance on Earth, beginning the UN Spacy/Zentraedi war that would change the history of both races forever.

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Mecha, Military, Romance, Science-Fiction, Space-Opera

Age Rating: Teenage and above (may contain bloody violence / bad language / nudity)

No. of Episodes: 36 episodes

Story

This time I’m writing a review for a famous classic anime, Macross. Since this is an 80s anime, I’ll try to make this review more standard rather than trying to compare this anime with current anime.

This anime has 3 main aspects which make it such a great success. The story, mecha and music. The story is basically consist of 2 major arcs, the first arc, ep1 until ep27, and the second arc ep28 until ep36.

The first arc is about the conflict between human and Zentradi. Starting from how they meet with the the Zentradi forces and how the conflict ends. The second arc is taking place 2 years after episode 27. This arc is to answer off the relationship of the protagonist. Well, sort of love triangle.

I’m very surprised with how great this anime conduct its story. For example, they specially have the additional second arc just to explain all the unanswered character relationships… The whole story seems make sense and questionless.

Well, Although they have the main plot explained well, however, some minor parts really bugging me. Such as, how many Valkyrie are on the Macross? It seems that they have countless… because they never seems to run out of fighters… by the way, the speed they build a city in Macross is amazingly fast. I mean to build a city in 1 week just using those scraps.. that doesn’t make any sense at all.

Overall, great story. Most of the episodes serves the story well.

I’ll have it rated: 33/40

Animation

Studio: Studio Nue, Artland, Tatsunoko Productions

Year: 1982

Type: Series

80s anime won’t have much eye candy artworks or any sophiscating effects. I’ll make it simple.

There are some who watch anime because of its beautiful artwork and they choose not to watch those classic anime because of their old style of artwork. However, I think that oldies has their own specialty too. I feel kinda nostalgic to watch this retro anime.

The art style is very easy to recognize. From the design and fashion, you’ll immediately know it is a 70s/80s anime. The animation is quite fluid and somehow a bit smooth, lol. Some scenes are very well recycled, sometimes I don’t even noticed it was a recycled scene. Perhaps nowadays computerized animation only produceses similar recycled scene.

I’ll have it rated: 24.5/30

Audio

Opening Theme(s):

  1. “Macross” by Fujiwara Makoto

Ending Theme(s):

  1. “Runner” by Fujiwara Makoto
  2. “Runner” by Iijima Mari

Insert Theme(s):

  1. Not Clear

As I said earlier that this anime’s 3 main aspects are the story, mecha and the music. The music for this anime is retro styled, and our modern generation might find it boring and uncreative. However during 80s, it actually caused a big reaction towards the fans. I can imagine how this anime become so famous because of its music.

Overall, amazing soundtrack and music. Classic and epic.

I’ll have it rated: 17/20

Personal Rating

Retro, and I enjoyed the show. Was impressed.

Anime Review: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

When They Cry 2

Plot Summary:

Continuing from the first series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai begins to shed some light on the dark mysteries prevalent in the preceding season. The young group of friends in the town of Hinamizawa continue to enter terrible conflicts with one another in their never ending summer of 1983, often ending with the brutal murder of one of their numbers. Furude Rika, with the help of her spiritual friend Hanyuu, tackles challenges over and over, trying her best to keep their lives from coming to a tragic end. With no end to the torture in sight, Rika must call upon the bonds of friendship and trust among her friends to discover the true villain of this eternal June.

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Horror, Mystery, Psychological, Thriller

Age Rating: Teenage and above (may contain bloody violence / bad language / nudity)

No. of Episodes: 24 episodes

Story

This anime is direct continuation from its prequel, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. So, if you haven’t watch it, please do so before watch this series. in this review, I’ll refer Higurashi no Naku Koro ni as “Higurashi” while “Kai” as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai.

To make it simple, Higurashi is the question while Kai is the answer.

I reviewed that Higurashi left a big question mark on my head, yes, a really big one. However, Kai destroyed the question mark by answering all the mysteries happened in the Higurashi. I get to understand more and more of the story when I watch Kai, it felt like Higurashi is the past, while Kai is present. All those things falls together and form an extraordinary great story.

All the characters are very well developed. In Higurashi, the story is quite rush, thus not all the characters are well developed. In Kai, all the characters are properly developed even those characters that you thought are minor characters, for example, Tomitake, Takano, Irie, Ooishi, Oryou and more…

I’m very very very satisfied with this series. The way it continues the story, the way it explain everything and the way it solve everything. Wonderful.

I’ll have it rated: 36/40

Animation

Studio: Studio DEEN

Year: 2007

Type: Series

The animation quality of Kai has improved a lot if you compare it with Higurashi. Characters has better artwork, thus looks more natural, balanced and moe(?)… Even the background artwork and some minor details are properly drawn.

The animation is also improved. Unlike Higurashi has unnatural or out of sync movements, Kai has everything fixed and improved.

Overall, I’m glad that they increased the budget for the animation production. Or else, such a great story would gone wasted.

I’ll have it rated: 25/30

Audio

Opening Theme(s):

  1. “Naraku no Hana (奈落の花)” by Shimamiya Eiko

Ending Theme(s):

  1. “Taishō.a (対象.a)” by anNina

Insert Theme(s):

Same as its predecessor, the sound work is brilliant. The first season is more to the mysterious side, thus the opening theme is creepy and dark. While this season is different, it explains those mysteries, show how Rika struggle through her fate. Therefore, the opening is more to sad and struggling feel.

Didn’t notice much changes regarding the BGM, some match the atmosphere and increase the mood. Otherwise, just so-so.

I’ll have it rated: 17/20

Personal Rating

I enjoyed both seasons in different ways. Higurashi series have great story. Would recommend to others.

Anime Review: True Tears

Posted by John on October 4, 2009

True Tears

Plot Summary:

Shinichiro is a student living in what would be a dream come true for most high school boys, but for him is mostly a frustration. A well liked girl in school named Hiromi has lived in his house for a year along with his family. Her father was a close friend of the family, and when he died they immediately took her in. She is popular and well liked, always smiles, is talented in sports- but Shinichiro knows there must be tears inside her. Having an artistic tendency, he makes watercolours of her and thinks about wishing to ease her tears. Yet he cannot bring up the nerve to talk to her even in his own home.

She, too, is quiet and withdrawn in their house, quite unlike at school. Shinichiro is also distracted by teasing from his friend Nobuse for watching Hiromi from afar, a curse of bad luck from a strange girl named Noe, and being forced to perform Muhiga dancing. By helping Noe he hopes to ease his own problems, yet he seems to have difficulty helping himself.

Genre: Drama, Romance, School

Age Rating: Teenage and above (may contain bloody violence / bad language / nudity)

No. of Episodes: 13 episodes

Story

Well, I don’t know anything about its visual novel. I heard that both stories are completely different. Anyway, I came across this anime while I was browsing through myanimelist and found it has high average ranking and popularity. Thus I give it a try.

At first, I thought it just another romance, slice-of-life and even harem anime… But wait… It turned out to be a really great anime. The story is similar with those AIR or Kanon… which has mysterious or abstruse kind of story. Many anime tried to do so, but failed to bring that kind of mood/feel. However, True Tears did it.

It has the metaphorical story telling method which some people find hard to understand. However, it is the main aspect that made it a great anime with wonderful story. Other than that, with 3 heroines, many people would thought that it is just another harem anime having a male protagonist teamed by the heroines. But, unlike those, it has its own method of story development. It has more expertly conducted interactions.

Overall, its being a while for watching any anime with such story. Thumbs up for it.

I’ll have it rated: 36/40

Animation

Studio: P.A.Works

Year: 2008

Type: Series

The animation quality of this anime is beyond my expectation. I don’t remember if I ever watch any anime produced by P.A.Works. This might be the first from them, and they successfully give me a great impression.

The artwork is impressive, the characters are vividly drawn. The characters looks alive under their creation. The movements are fluid and natural. For example during the basket ball scenes, which is superbly natural.

Other than that, the background details is impressive. Usually a animation studio would not bother to care the background details in order to cut down the production cost. However, What I’ve seen in this anime is that, the background scenes are actually moving. Everything are don so naturally that I’m so impressed with this animation studio.

I also like the way they make some special or memorable scenes with water-colour effect. Just like how Shinichiro’s art book. It increase the impact of the story greatly.

This might be one of the anime with best animation I’ve ever seen.

The background music is great too, it provide what the story needs. Not to forget the voice cast in this anime. The voice cast is done very well.
