Story
Pros: New sequel
Cons: Improper starting of the story | Lots of questions left unanswered | Too short
This OVA has minimum content of the character development, and I think it is not really that great even though I enjoyed the story in a certain way…
It starts of with Basara leaving Macross 7 and arrived at the planet Zola. There are lots of questions left unanswered or not explained properly… For instance, why he want to leave Macross 7, what are those galactic whales. Other than that, I see there are lots of crashes in the plot – The are researchers studying the galactic whales, why they never know that the dead whales will decent to the Planet Zola…
I’ll have it rated: 29/40
Animation
Studio: Aishi Productions
Year: 1997
Type: OVA
Since it is produced in 1997, obviously there are a lot of animation improvements in this OVA if you compare it with other Macross 7 OVAs which dated back to 1995.
Good point is that the animation are done really well, especially the CG effects. Before this, there’s barely any CG used in the Macross 7 series. By they way, I love the lighting and color tone used in this OVA, it looks more bright, dynamic and clear.
Overall, I’m satisfied with the animation quality of this OVA and I don’t have much to complain since it has done quite well for a 97s anime.
I’ll have it rated: 24/30
Audio
Opening Theme(s):
- “Dynamite Explosion” by Fire Bomber
Ending Theme(s):
- “Parade” by Fire Bomber
Insert Theme(s):
- “Planet Dance” by Fire Bomber
- “GO (Jiyuu na Uta)” by Fire Bomber
- “New Frontier” by Fire Bomber
- “Angel Voice” by Fire Bomber
- and more…
There are several new songs come with this OVA. The obvious 2 are the opening and ending theme songs. I’m very impressed with the animation for both opening and ending themes. CG for opening and using real life scenes as the background for ending.
Meanwhile other new insert songs such as “GO (Jiyuu na Uta)”, “New Frontier”, and “Angel Voice” are great too.
I’ll have it rated: 18.5/20
Personal Rating
Apart from the animation and music… The story is still lack of completeness…
